Wisdom teeth extractions are almost a rite of passage for Americans: About 85 percent of people need to have their wisdom teeth removed sometime in their life. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. If there isn’t room for them, or they grow in at an improper angle, they can cause pain, become infected, or push other teeth out of alignment.
Sometimes other teeth become so badly damaged, either through decay or other reasons, they must be removed to protect the health of the rest of the mouth.
Downtown Dental Group is happy to provide extraction services on a case-by-case basis after a discussion with the patient.
Wisdom Teeth and Extractions – What To Expect
Most extractions are completed in about an hour, though impacted wisdom teeth may take a little longer to complete. You’ll receive a local anesthetic, and teeth are removed quickly. In some cases, dissolvable stitches suture your gum back together to protect it from infection.
After the extraction, expect pain or sensitivity in the region of the removed tooth for up to three days. Some patients experience swelling and bleeding as well. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication to help the healing process.
