Spring break and summer vacation are busy travel seasons for many of you. While you travel, don’t let your dental health go to the wayside. Here are some easy tips to remember to maintain your optimal oral health.

Let Your Toothbrush Dry

Before you pack your toothbrush into your suitcase, make sure that it has had time to dry. A wet toothbrush stored in a dark, confined space is the perfect equation for bacteria growth. If you must pack it after using it, be sure to clean it off when you arrive at your destination. Another alternative is to use a disposable toothbrush for the length of your vacation.

Pack Your Toothbrush Separately

You may be tempted to throw your toothbrush into your toiletries bag with everything else. However, there can be a lot of germs and bacteria in that bag that you won’t want to get on your toothbrush. We suggest that you use a toothbrush case or a resealable plastic bag to separate it from the other items in your toiletries bag.

Remember the Toothpaste

Phone charger? Check. Toothbrush? Check. Toothpaste? Oops! It happens to the best of us. If you forget toothpaste you can always run down to the nearest convenience store and get some. However, if that’s not an option, you can still brush your teeth with just water on your toothbrush. It’s better than not brushing at all.

Water Quality

You may find that your vacation destination does not have a safe or clean water quality. When in doubt, brush with bottled water. This is going to be your best protection against illness from any contaminants in the water.

See Your Dentist Before Your Trip

By scheduling a dental appointment before you go on vacation, you are lowering the chance that you will need emergency dental care while on vacation. Your dentist can check for any issues that need to be addressed right away. Be sure to schedule the appointment with enough time in between in the event you will need a follow-up appointment.
